Examples in Structural Analysis by William M. C. McKenzie; Binsheng ZhangThis third edition of Examples in Structural Analysis uses a step-by-step approach and provides an extensive collection of fully worked and graded examples for a wide variety of structural analysis problems. It presents detailed information on the methods of solutions to problems and the results obtained. Also given within the text is a summary of each of the principal analysis techniques inherent in the design process and where appropriate, an explanation of the mathematical models used. The text emphasises that software should only be used if designers have appropriate knowledge and understanding of the mathematical assumptions, modelling and limitations inherent in the programs they use. It establishes the use of hand-methods for obtaining approximate solutions during preliminary design and an independent check on the answers obtained from computer analysis. What is New in the Third Edition: A new chapter covers the analysis and design of cables and arches subjected to concentrated loads and uniformly distributed loads. For cables without or with simply supported pinned trusses or steel girder beams through equally spaced hangers, tension forces, support reactions, sags and slopes in cables are determined. For two-pinned or three-pinned arches with parabolic, arched and semi-circular shapes, axial forces, radial shear forces and bending moments at various sections of arches are determined. An existing chapter has been expanded to the construction and use of influence lines for pin-pointed trusses and lattice girders. Also, the chapter Direct Stiffness Methods has been revisited and amended.

Manual of Structural Design by Eberhard MöllerDecisions regarding the supporting structure have an influence on the design of a building as well as an economic and ecological impact. The creation of great and innovative buildings requires close collaboration of architects, clients and structural engineers. Modern structural systems can benefit from an appropriate combination of various building materials. The "Atlas Tragwerke" (Support Structure Atlas) goes beyond material confines and showcases suitable construction principles for different building tasks. Classical masterpieces and outstanding current projects are used to demonstrate the potentials of structural systems for various building tasks and consider alternatives. Easy-to-compare structural principles offer a basis for a common level of communication in an interdisciplinary planning process.

Dynamics of Soils and Its Engineering Applications by Swami SaranThe book offers systematic dynamic analysis of soils and their engineering applications, including machine foundations, and aims to develop a clear understanding of the subject. It comprises sixteen chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the various problems in soil dynamics. In Chapter 2, concepts of theory of vibrations are discussed along with their applications in designing Vibration Absorbers and Pickups. Wave propagation in elastic medium including wave refraction in layered medium is covered in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 deals with the procedure of determining dynamic properties of soils using various laboratory and field tests. Dynamic earth pressures in retaining walls and dynamic bearing capacity of footings are dealt with in Chapters 5 and 6 respectively. Chapters 7and 8 respectively deal with dynamic behavior of pile foundations and slopes. Causes of liquefaction of soils and prediction of liquefaction potential have been discussed in Chapter 9. In Chapter 10, the procedure of estimating the unbalanced forces in various types of machines are covered. Chapters 11, 12 and 13 deal with the analysis and design of foundations of reciprocating machine, hammer, and turbo-generators respectively. In Chapter 14, problems of vibration isolation and screening are dealt with. Chapter 15 discusses the analysis and design of reinforced earth wall located in seismic areas. A new concept of a conventional rigid retaining wall having reinforced backfill is presented in Chapter 16, giving complete analysis and design procedure considering seismic forces.

Engineering Nature by Jakob SchoofThanks to high-performance composite structures made of wood and steel or concrete, wooden buildings are now being erected far beyond the high-rise boundaries. An end to the increase in altitude is hardly in sight. Wooden constructions are also on the uptrend in residential and office construction, sports halls, industrial buildings and bridges. They are the epitome of sustainable building and, thanks to new prefabrication processes, are also competitive in terms of construction costs. The book shows the current development of structural planning with wood on the basis of around 20 outstanding engineering structures. The engineers involved in the planning describe the conception of the supporting structures as well as individual solutions for their implementation.
